SIR M.VISHVESHWARIAH : THE ICON
Sir M.Vishveshwariah probably known for his Honesty and discipline was born on 15th September 1860 to Srinivas Shastry and Venkachamma in Mudennahalli, Chikkaballapur District, Karnataka, he was brought up in a poor Brahmin family, even though family was poor he was rich at Studies.
EDUCATION
Sir M. Vishveshwariah also known as Sir M.V or Mokshagundam Vishveshwariah completed primary Schooling in Chikkaballapur and High School in Bangalore. one of the greatest achievements in his schooling days was that he passed his matriculation exams with 1st Rank, after Schooling he went to Central college, Bangalore and completed his Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1881. Later he studied Engineering in Science college, at Pune and got 1st rank in FCE AND LCE examination in 1883.
After completing his engineering degree Sir M.V joined PWD department as a Assistant Engineer in Bombay province in 1884. Sir M.V founded automated barrier floodgates and later on these automated floodgates were installed in a dam near Pune known as " Khadakvasla" in the year 1903.
In the year 1906-1907 Sir M.V went to Aden, Egypt where he studied about water supply and drainage systems and later on he designed and implemented the system of water supply to Aden.
After coming back from Egypt Sir M.V designed and constructed a dam across two rivers in Hyderabad namely Moosi and Iyasi, the idea behind this construction was to protect Hyderabad city from Floods and even his ideas helped the city of Vishakapatnam, now in Andhra Pradesh State to control the city's port from soil erosion.
DEWAN OF MYSORE
Sir M.V before becoming Dewan of Mysore became Chief Engineer of Mysore State ruled by KrishnaRaja Wodeyar - iv in 1909, Later in 1911 Sir M.V became Dewan of Mysore in the year 1912.
UNFORGETTABLE ACHIEVEMENTS IN THE FILED OF IRRIGATION
1. KRISHNARAJASAGAR DAM:
Sir M.V is the chief architect of this dam, it is built across river Cauvery, in Mandya district of Karnataka in the year 1932, this dam is one of the biggest dam in India, this dam holds the water upto 125 feets in height and the dam has capacity to irrigate upto over 1,10,000/- acres of land.
2. SHARAVATHI HYDRO - ELECTRIC PROJECT:
Sir M.V designed and started this project to generate hydro electric power in world famous water fall known as "JOG FALLS" and the power station has the capacity to generate electricity upto 1035 Mega Watt.
REMARKABLE ACHIEVEMENTS BY SIR M.V DURING DEWAN OF MYSORE
Some of the remarkable achievements by Sir M.V during Dewan of Mysore are:-
1. Visveshwariah started Iron and Steel Plant in the year 1923, the main product manufactured here is Pig-Iron.
2. Founded State Bank of Mysore.
3. Founded Mysore Soap Factory.
4. Sir M.V is the Founder of Agriculture University.
5. Designed and constructed a Layout in Bangalore known as Jayanagar which is in South of Bangalore.
OTHER ACHIEVEMENTS
Other achievements include:-
1. The Railway road between the cities of Bangalore and Mysore.
2. Bhatkal Harbour was constructed and developed for fishing.
3. Founded Engineering College in Bangalore.
4. Upgraded MahaRani college in Mysore.
5. One of the founder of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited in Bangalore.
6. Founder of Jayachamarajendra Polytechnic institute.
7. Century Club.
8. Public libraries in Mysore and Bangalore.
9. Developed Kannada Sahitya Parishad.
10. Developed Mysore chambers of Commerce.
IMPORTANT AWARDS
1. Companion of Indian Empire at Delhi Durbar in 1911.
2. Knight of the Order of the Indian Empire in the 1915.
3. Awarded D.Sc at Calcutta University in the year 1921.
4. LL.D at Bombay University in 1931.
5. Elected as the Honorary Life Member of Institutions of Engineer in the year 1943.
6. D.Sc from Allahabad University in the 1944.
7. Doctorate of LL.D from Mysore University in the year 1948.
8. Awarded Country's most prestigious award " BHARATA RATNA" in the year 1955.
SIR M.V IN THE FIELD OF LITERATURE

For his remarkable achievements and his discipline Sir M.V remains Icon of Modern India, Sir M.V died on 12th April 1962.
ENGINEERS DAY
To show tribute to Sir M.V for his remarkable achievements and contributions in the field of Civil Engineering his birth date i.e., 15th September of every year celebrated as Engineers Day in India.
